Legend of Batur Lake
A common legend says that the story of Kebo Iwa has something to do with how Batur Lake came to be. Kebo Iwa is a dangerous giant with a big appetite. When he is hungry, he often attacks livestock and people.
Residents who were already restless with Kebo Iwa’s behavior finally developed a plan to overcome it.
Finally, the residents asked Kebo Iwa to dig a well as a water source for residents in the dry season.
Kebo Iwa will be rewarded with a lot of food after the task. Hearing the reward for a big meal from the residents made Kebo Iwa immediately willing to build a well.
Day and night, Kebo Iwa dug a well until he fell asleep in his dug hole. When Kebo Iwa fell asleep in the well, residents threw limestone and closed the drilled holes.
Kebo Iwa, trapped in the hole, could not escape because the escape route was blocked with rocks, and the water had overflowed.
This overflowing water finally drowned Kebo Iwa; now, the overflowing water has become a lake. The mound left over from the well digging then grew into Mount Batur.
That’s the legend circulating in the community about the origin of the formation of this lake.
